13 — Instaforge IF-1: Manufacturing Concept
The Instaforge IF-1 is the long-term manufacturing research target for Metallic Sciences — a high-energy synthesis platform combining electromagnetic forming, rapid solidification, and programmable thermal gradients to produce components with spatially controlled microstructures.
The engineering premise: electromagnetic forming (pulsed magnetic fields applying Lorentz forces to compact metal powder) can achieve full-density compaction in microseconds without the anisotropy of layer-by-layer additive manufacturing. Combined with controlled thermal gradients, this could enable single-step production of parts with different crystal structures in different regions.
The IF-1 is a concept under development. Electromagnetic forming is established technology (ASM Handbook, Vol 14B). Extending it to precision microstructure control at production scale is the research program.
